The virgin of the Candelaria Festival originates from the 1780 Great Rebellion of Tupac Amaru II against Spanish rule.Legend has it that as the rebel Indian Leader Julian Apasa Tupac Catari tried to attack the city ,the Puneños paraded a 70 cm high imagen known besiegers,seeing only a mass of lights and burning torches marching toward them,felt into confusion and retreated.The people of Puno renamed the virgin La Candelaria and made her their Patron.Even without the flames of the torches or the now famous costumes,trombones,trumpets,baritones,and Sousa-style wrap-around basses being swung to the funked-up toetapping military rhythms and thumped enormous,drums painted with the name and banner of the group ,or “hermandad”while dancers swayed elegantly from side to side in the most simple of the many traditional dance forms on display.
